What is spondylosis?
Spondylosis refers to the degeneration of the spine. Most commonly, spondylosis is used to refer to osteoarthritis and its associated symptoms. It is also used to refer to conditions like spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and neck and back pain. The causes of spondylosis include age-related degenerative changes and accidents, injuries, or traumas. Board-Certified Neurosurgeon

What are the symptoms of spondylosis?
Spine spondylosis (neck and back) can produce a number of symptoms. The most common of which include the following:
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Decreases range of motion
These symptoms present in the area that is affected by the condition. In some cases, spondylosis may compress spinal nerve roots or the spinal cord and cause extremity pain, weakness, or numbness.
Symptom recognition is a very important part of diagnosing spondylosis. Patients who choose
Dr. Virella can look forward to an accurate evaluation of their symptoms and the creation of personalized treatment plan.
What are spondylosis treatment/procedure options?
Spondylosis in its early stages may be treated using nonsurgical treatment options. Usually, a holistic treatment plan that includes any combination of the following is used:
- Rest
- Pain and/or anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical Therapy
- Steroid Injections
Spondylosis that does not respond to nonsurgical treatment or spondylosis in its severe stages may require spondylosis surgery. The most common minimally invasive surgeries Dr. Virella specializes in and commonly performs include the following:
- Lumbar/Cervical Discectomy. Dr. Virella performs this procedure to decompress a pinched nerve. He carefully removes pieces of the intervertebral disc, bone, and/or soft tissue that put pressure on a nerve.
- Lumbar/Cervical Fusion. This procedure is a discectomy with an extra step. Dr. Virella uses bone graft and small rods and screws to fuse adjacent vertebrae and stabilize the spine. Dr. Virella commonly performs this procedure on patients who have pain associated with movement.
The benefits of
minimally invasive spine surgery include a smaller incision, less postoperative pain, and a faster recovery.
